Artist’s Statement

As an ADHD person, I have been getting neurological brain scans since the age of 8. I think mental illnesses and disorders are often portrayed as just an emotional experience, when it’s also a chemical experience, and this aspect could be used to portray it in a different light, helping to reduce stigmas attached to each.

Using the transparency of square Perspex (200mm x 200mm), each permanent marker drawing attempts to emulate that of a brain scan, mirroring photo-negatives. Instead of marking the difference between a brain with a mental disorder with the common brain to try to figure out a way to eradicate it, the artwork marks the beauty of its differences. The 3D aspect immediates this sense of ‘perspective.’
