Baptism of Memory
Video installation
Artist’s Statement
We wear our memories, using them to navigate our actions in everyday life. Some we try cling onto, others we want to scrub off. Whilst I am reminiscent and nostalgic, I am almost itchy with discomfort as I realise their power over me. This is mirrored, through the video-reflection of the memory archive. Thus, I recontextualise the Christian rite of Baptism to baptise my memories. The gown I created embossed with my memories is shaped as a hospital gown as I am ‘reborn’ into a new sense of innocence. Through the creation of this, I attempt to challenge the definitions of ‘sculpture.’ As wearable, soluble sculpture, it falls off with time, transforming it into a post-object artwork. Further, I made the work multi-faceted as I installed it to be projected through water.
